July 7, 2011

PITT MEADOWS, BC – John Becker confirmed today that he is running for Pitt Meadows Mayor. Becker is a lawyer and current City Councillor and a vocal and passionate supporter of Pitt Meadows. Becker was first elected to Council in 2002, and began his civic service  in 2001 when he was selected to sit on the Agriculture Advisory Committee – a position he still holds.

Among his many contributions, he successfully lobbied  the federal government to help secure a $1 million grant from the federal government to develop the Pitt Meadows artificial  turf field and similarly lobbied the provincial government  to help secure a $500,000 provincial grant to build Pitt Meadows own Spirit Square.

As a three-term Councillor, current issues of priority for Becker include regional transportation initiatives,  fiscal  sustainability and the North Lougheed Corridor development proposal and its potential to bring economic benefits to the area while also considering agricultural needs of the community and the region.

If elected, Becker will continue to practice law and provide leadership for his law firm.

Becker graduated from U.B.C. with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977, and graduated from U.B.C. Law School in 1980. He moved to the area to start his own law practice in 1981, and moved his business to Pitt Meadows in 1993. Becker & Company, now one of the region’s oldest and largest law firms, has served the community in almost all areas of law and currently has six lawyers.

He is a past member of the Maple Ridge Parks & Recreation Commission,  past Board member of the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Community Services Council, Past President of the local Kinsman Service Club and Provincial Governor, volunteer legal advisor for a number of non-profit organizations, past Board member of the Maple Ridge Treatment Centre, member of the Pitt Meadows Agricultural Advisory Committee and is currently the Chair of  the Board of Governors of Meadowridge  Independent School and President of the local B.C.
